Let me try to paint a picture of what Christmas feels like in what people tend to term "Hausa States", "Arewa States" or "Northern states".
(All meaning states mostly dominated by the Hausa's)
Growing Up with Christmas in Taraba State, Nigeria
As someone born and raised in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, my childhood was filled with magical Christmas memories.
My parents made every holiday count.
It wasn't about spending huge sums of money; it was about the moments.
The Jukun traditions, the family gatherings, and the unspoken bond of togetherness made it all so special.
Every holiday season, our family made the trip back home to Wukari, the heart of our family roots.
The moment we arrived, it was like stepping into a world full of life and love.
Cousins would pour into the family house, turning it into a lively hub of laughter, games, and storytelling.
Christmas Eve: “Daren Christmas” ("a day before Christmas")
The day before Christmas in Taraba State is fondly called "Daren Christmas." It’s the highlight of the season.
This is when the Boys Brigade (BB) makes their rounds.
Picture this: young boys marching through the streets, playing drums with rhythmic precision, singing carols that echo joy through the village.
Here is what the Boys Brigade (B.B) looks like (I captured this in Jalingo, Nigeria, sometime in 2023):
The energy is unmatched.
No one sleeps on Christmas Eve!
The vibrant sounds of music, laughter, and drumbeats keep the spirit alive until the first rays of Christmas morning.
Christmas Day: Dressing Up and “Yawon Christmas”
The morning after a sleepless night, everyone wakes up - usually late, around 10 a.m - to prepare for church.
This is when the best dresses come out. It’s a sight to behold, as the streets fill with people in colorful attires heading to church to celebrate the birth of Christ.
After church, the fun continues.
The streets come alive with children and teenagers participating in "Yawon Christmas" in Hausa.
This is a local tradition where kids visit neighbors and friends, enjoying a variety of delicious meals, sweets, and drinks.
It’s a day filled with excitement, games, and an overwhelming sense of community.
What Makes Christmas in Taraba So Special?
1. The Togetherness: Taraba State feels like one big family during Christmas. Whether you’re in Wukari, Dampar, or Jalingo, the sense of unity is undeniable.
2. Security for Kids: Unlike some parts of the country, Taraba is known for its relatively peaceful environment, especially during festivities.
Parents feel safe letting their kids roam and explore.
3. Cultural Blends: Taraba is home to diverse tribes, and Christmas here reflects this rich cultural heritage.
It’s a melting pot of traditions, from the drumming of the Boys Brigade to the communal feasts shared among neighbors.
