Amazon Associates Program Rejected IbiFoundry LTD From their Affiliate Program [My Honest Thoughts as CEO + What We Did Wrong]

So, this is not one of those posts where everything works perfectly and ends in instant success.

This is a real behind-the-scenes update.

Amazon Associates — one of the most popular affiliate programs in the world — just rejected my application for the IbiFoundry.com.ng blog.

And guess what?I take full responsibility.

I made a very simple mistake that cost me the chance to be part of a program I’ve known about for over 10 years.

Let me break it all down — what went wrong, what Amazon actually requires, what they emailed me, and how you can avoid this mistake (especially if you're based in Nigeria or just starting out like I was).

🛑 First: What Is Amazon Associates?

Amazon Associates is Amazon’s official affiliate program that lets you:

• Promote any product from Amazon using a unique link

• Earn a commission for every purchase someone makes through that link

• Track performance, earnings, clicks, and more

It's one of the most beginner-friendly affiliate platforms but also one of the strictest in terms of approval and compliance.

That last part? I learned the hard way.

📩 The Rejection Email I Got

Here’s the core of what Amazon told me:

“We noticed that your application did not generate at least three qualifying sales within the first 180 days. Unfortunately, your application has been rejected. You are welcome to reapply once you are ready.”

Ouch.

The email was polite, but the message was clear:You signed up too early. You didn’t send us enough customers. You’re out.

🤦🏽‍♂️ What I Did Wrong (And I KNEW Better)

Here’s the raw truth:

• I signed up to Amazon Associates literally days after launching IbiFoundry.com.ng

• I had zero traffic at the time

• I had no blog content ranked on Google yet

• I was still figuring out the technical and strategy side of affiliate marketing

• And I didn’t pay attention to Amazon’s 180-day rule

So yes — I rushed into it.

Even though I’ve known about Amazon Associates for over 10 years, I never once actually tried to apply.

And when I finally did…I just clicked “sign up,” added the links… and waited.

⚠️ Amazon’s 180-Day Rule Explained

Let’s get this clear:

✅ To remain in the Amazon Associates Program, you must refer at least 3 qualifying purchases within 180 days of signing up.

If you don’t?Your account is automatically closed.

You can reapply again later, but all previous earnings, settings, and links are invalidated.

So basically:

• 3 purchases

• In 6 months

• From your affiliate links

• Or you’re out.

📈 My Site Wasn’t Ready (And That’s the Lesson)

When I signed up, I thought:

“I’ll just add a few affiliate links and maybe someone will buy something.”

But I had no traffic.No SEO authority.No audience built.No real chance of converting even one visitor.

It takes time to grow organic traffic from Google — a lot of time if you're using SEO as your strategy.

Now, IbiFoundry.com.ng gets over 7,000+ clicks monthly from Google alone, but back then I was getting zero.

🎓 The Lesson:

Don’t sign up for Amazon Associates (or any affiliate program) until:

1. Your website has real, consistent traffic

2. You have at least 5–10 blog posts that can attract buyers

3. You understand your audience’s buying intent

4. You know how to insert affiliate links strategically, not just randomly

5. You can follow up with those links using email, social, or other content

📊 Affiliate Marketing Is Not a Shortcut — It’s a Skill

This experience humbled me.

Because while I’ve made affiliate commissions from other tools, apps, and services I genuinely use and recommend…Amazon is a different beast.

They are strict.They review manually.They require actual conversion.And they won’t babysit you through it.

But you know what?

💬 It’s all part of the journey.

🛠️ What I’m Doing Now Instead

I’m not giving up.

In fact, here’s what I’m doing instead to make sure I’m ready next time:

• Publishing more problem-solving blog content

• Tracking my SEO growth weekly

• Building email lists to follow up with affiliate recommendations

• Partnering with affiliate programs that actually accept beginners

• Reapplying to Amazon only when the blog consistently gets traffic that converts

🔁 Can You Reapply to Amazon Associates?

Yes, you can.

Amazon doesn’t ban you — they just close your account due to inactivity or non-performance.

To reapply:

1. Build up your site and traffic

2. Create content that adds Amazon links naturally

3. Make sure your About and Contact pages are live

4. Use tools like Google Analytics and Search Console to prove your traffic

5. Apply again when you're confident you can convert visitors to buyers
